According to sports.qq.com, head coach Lu Shanzhen believes that Cheng is capable of coaching the younger gymnasts as China is now weak on vault and floor exercise, the events which Cheng was specialized on. Cheng Fei won three consecutive world vault titles and a world floor title in 2006. Shanzhen also stated that Cheng's experience on these events might help the team out.
As a team captain, Cheng Fei has helped the younger gymnasts in their techniques.
Cheng Fei is well know for her good sportsmanship, her competitors Sandra Izbasa of Romania and Shawn Johnson of USA called her a great competitor, a good sport and inspirational.
Cheng Fei led her team to win their first ever Olympic title in 2008 as well as their first world title in 2006. Fei announced her retirement in June of this year due to a ruptured achilles.
