Sandra Izbasa " I Did The Cheng Vault In Podium Training In London"

A double twisting Yurchenko and a Mustafina secured a gold Olympic medal for Sandra Izbasa, but was that really her plan to win the Olympic title?.

The 22 year old gymnast revealed that her plan to win the gold medal on vault in London was doing the Cheng vault which stands at 6.5 difficulty as her first vault, so why Izbasa ended up doing an easier one "I didn't try a difficult vault and I decided to go for safety after Maroney fell." Izbasa told Prosport "Yes, I could have tried the Cheng Fei vault, I did that in the podium training, the judges saw it. I could have performed it but it would have been an unnecessary risk.".

An unexpected fall from U.S gymnast and the favorite to win the vault title Mckayla Maroney took a fall on her second vault opening the door for Izbasa who was the last to perform on that night to claim her second Olympic title. Izbasa has never debuted the Cheng vault.

A winner of a gold Olympic medal, receives a life annuity but in Romania, its different " it’s just like an average salary. You can’t count only on this because you don’t know what the future holds. They can take it away in a month, a year or two." Izbasa said she won't rely on the life annuity or wait for it as either way it won't support her and she will only rely on her work. Many Romanian athletes find themselves going into an early retirement to guarantee that they will receive life annuity.

On her future plans, Izbasa tends to finish her college. She had to postpone it due to the Olympics. However Sandra said she doesn't like to plan for anything as she believes "if you do too much planning, nothing will work out".

Sandra Izbasa who has been in dilemma on whether to retire or not, said she is aware of her age and the effect of the previous injures to the point where she doesn't want to make a fool of herself "I must know what I really want so that I don’t regret anything afterwards. For now, I will keep training for the galas and then we will see."

  1. Yeah well about the life annuity Sandra responded on a controversy because there were many comments here about the fact that athletes retire from early age on purpose only to receive that annuity. And that Sandra's response.
